Prof.dr. Joan Garcia
Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain
Joan Garcia is professor of environmental engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia – BarcelonaTech. Dr. Garcia has decidedly interdisciplinary interests in environmental engineering, environmental sciences and environmental biotechnology.
The theoretical basis of his research are founded both in biology, in particular microbiology and ecology and engineering subdisciplines such as reactor engineering, biochemical engineering and ecological engineering.
For over 30 years Prof.dr. Joan Garcia has developed research to decipher internal processes of “natural” systems for bioremediation and ecological restoration. These are systems mimicking nature and maximizing eco-efficiency to allow treatment and management of a wide range of polluted waters and wastes. In last years, his focus was on the treatment of polluted water streams such as urban wastewaters, agricultural drainage and aquaculture discharges with microalgae cultures. Microalgae biomass produced in these cultures can be a source of bioproducts, so the interest in these systems goes beyond bioremediation itself.
At ICEEM12, Prof.dr. Juan Garcia will deliver a plenary lecture entitled:
EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL OF CYANOBACTERIAL MICROBIOMES FOR SUSTAINABLE BIOPRODUCTS
